Gonaives, Haiti Update (from Emory Wilson)
Hello
It has been a few of very trying weeks that have taxed each of us here in Gonaives and Jubilee. It has been one of the most emotional rollercoasters we have been on, but God has seen us through it and He has been glorified in so many ways. I have not been able to communicate with many of you, because of computer issues, so I will recap what has happened in the last three weeks. I am thankful for those at SSCC who have blessed the ministry with a new computer and for Barry Harrell recovering all my files and info from the old one. It is a blessing to be able to communicate with you again.
When Hurricane Tomas passed by Gonaives on Friday night November 5th, it left a about a foot of water in the city and in Jubilee. It was a trying time for many families. Laura Lynn and Rachel were able to assist many people during that time by allowing them to come to the school to dry off and have a place to sleep. We thank God for His refuge in times of storms. Julie was at the house and made preparations for the worst along with Amos, Gertrude and Marvins. There was alitttle water in the Garage but it did not enter the rest of the house. We praise God for honoring our prayers.
On Monday the 8th of November after Tomas left we were faced with yet another storm called cholera. By Wednesday 8 people in Jubilee died from it. The whole team here was awesome in helping those who had cholera. There were many sick in their homes and many sick people came to the school to get help. The hospital in Roboto was not taking anyone with Cholera and the other hospitals were overflowing. It was not a good situation for three days. On Wednesday afternooon, We visited the Hospital again in Roboto and they allowed us to take the sick people which were at the school to their hospital. This gave us a much needed break. Each day we were dispensing clean water and oral rehydration fluids to hundreds of people. We praise God for the well which was very timely. We were able to help with education for prevention. Mary, Julie, Laura Lynn, Rachel, and Brian all worked very hard to keep people alive through iv, oral rehydration, and education. In the mist of the crisis, Nathan Blessing with Cross International traveled to Gonaives with a truck loaded with supplies which we were out of or did not have. We praise God for His provision through this time.
On the morning of Saturday the 13th, the hospital again would not assist people who had cholera. Laura Lynn took several people in who had needs and began helping them again. In the afternoon we were able to return the 5 patients at the school to the hospital in Roboto. Cholera seems to be better, but reports are they are expecting it to get worse. Over 1,600 people have lost their lives to cholera in Haiti. Near 11am that morning, Julie Aurthur who is our teacher from Virginia, received a phone call that her brother Justin Arthur had been killed in an auto accident. I have never experienced this and do not know what this family has had to endure, but I know God has been there with them. Julie was able to get a flight out that evening with Mary going with and beside her. I thank God for Mary's compassion for others which compelles her to minister to them. Mary has returned and Julie will return on the 30th. Please keep Julie and her family in your prayers.
On Tuesday the 16th we received a call from some Doctors and nurses near Cap Haitia who needed a ride to get to the airport on Wednesday. I have never traveled there but the senery was great and it reminded me of what Jubilee will look like one day. They were able to spend the night with us in Gonaives and made it to PAP in time for thier flight. We seen God's hand of protection and provision in a mighty way through this. We thank god for new friends and relationships.
We thank God for his provision through those who have visited with us over the past few weeks. The first week of November, we had a team from the Waycross, Blackshear, Ga. area with us. Their activities included completing the top on the cistren, teaching worhip songs to the children in the school, and giving lots of love to many children and adults alike. They also were very good friends who gave us encouragement to keep going. We thank God for those who have worked on this cistren to provide clean water to this community. It was definately in a good time with the cholera outbreak. On the 12th through the 14th, we had a few representatives from Somebody cares Houston who were awesome prayer warriors for the season we were going through. In addittion to praying, they helped with the medical issues, told bible stories with puppets and gave much love to everyone. They blessed the school breakfast program with much peanut butter. They were a great encouragement for Mary. The last two weeks Kathy Brooks has led a couple teams who have worked on many different projects including gardening and small business'. We also had a team here from First Baptist Hattiesberg who have been a blessing helping with construction, medical needs and loving the children. Brian Smith has been here for a few weeks working on the housing project. We now have two foundations completed and are woking on the walls of one. He will return soon to continue on this project. We thank him and those from Omaha who are working beside us in Jubilee. We praise God for those who visit us and bring the hope of God's unconditional love with them to share with us and our friends.
If you would like to see more updates on what has happened the last few weeks, you can look at muchministies.org, omaharapidresponse.blogspot.com, omaharapidresponse.org, or you can find Laura Lynn on facebook at lauralynnnichols. Many of you have asked how you can help with the school. There are opportunities to help in the school through jubileekidsinc.org .
The presidential election was held yesterday with much violence and people dumping ballot boxes in the street. It is expected to bring unrest. Please continue to pray for the government and this process.
I hope each of you have had a wonderful week this week as you have reflected on what you are thankful for during this season. As I have reflected the last few weeks, the thing that I am thankful for is God placing people around me who in the mist of a battle run towards the sound of the gunfire. Through all that has happened everyone involved has served selflessly and had the interest of others as more important than their own lives and welfare. I think that is what Oswald Chambers is talking about as he encourages us to identify with Christ's interest in other people. As we continue to ponder Jesus' probable action I am realizing that many times it calls us to a place of sacrifice and suffering on the behalf of others which is what Jesus set an example for us to do. I have found that I have failed in this area so many times because I thought what was on my agenda was more important than what God wanted to do in the lives of others, therefore I followed my desires and missed identifying His interest in others. Lord help us each day to deny ourselves and follow in your light and your steps in Jesus name. We thank you for your prayers and support and are blessed to see God honoring our prayers as we work in the Kingdom together.
With love in Christ

The Hope Center
The Hope Center 2010 from The Hope Center on Vimeo.
See, Ronald was one of the kids in my outreach bible study when i volunteered from fall 2003 to spring 2005. he was young and full of hope...later after i had stopped volunteering i heard of the loss in his family and to see his success story brought me to tears.
Every ministry i have ever been involved with since working with THC i have in a sense compared them to it...not in a bad way or anything...i just say this to explain they always come back to my mind...
the way they organize things, to their forms, to their guidelines, to there dedication, to their motivation, to the way they love people, their faith, their training, their leadership, their patience, their consistancy, their education, their radical heart for change...the growth that has happened can only be explained by God that is working in and through them...
i feel so honored to have ever been a part of something so beautiful...
thanks Hope Center...for all you have taught me and continue to teach me from afar....
but more importantly thank you for the way you change the world through the community in Kansas City....

hope in the dark
i shared this on facebook...but felt it really needed to be on my blog so if its a repeat sorry, but if not enjoy my ramblings on life...
i first saw this book a year or so ago at my dear friend sarah's... (we are kindred spirits) anyway it showed up at the market place and i couldn't pass it up...its a book filled with beautiful breath taking photography that breaks your heart and then breathes life back into it over and over as you turn the pages...this is a quote from one of the pages...and the photo of the African man with wisdom would make it much more of an impact...but i just had to put it on here...so read it...think about it...and be challenged to daily be thankful for what the Lord has given us...
"we know Americans pity Africans," he told me. "But sometimes i think Africans pity Americans." "How so?" i asked him.
"Americans seem to expect that everything will be provided for them. For us," he said, "this ear of corn is a gift from God. This evening rain is a shower of mercy upon us. This healthy breath is life-giving. And, maybe tomorrow we will not have such things, but our hearts are so full from God's provision."

Dorothys Update 10/22/10
School in Port au Prince officially started Monday, October 4. Mich, Rosa, Claudine and Johnny started to school. It was their first time in school. Our whole household was in a tizzy, ironing, polishing, straightening, brushing and combing, packing lunchboxes and giving breakfast earlier than usual. It all got done and we walked the kids to school. No one cried, they were so happy to be there!
Gertie came for an overnight visit Friday October 8. It was SO good to see her! Her report card was all "tres bien"s (very goods), unsurprising for such a talented young girl. We gave her mother money for this school year. Mom promised to bring her for a longer visit in December.
Natalie, Natasha and Naomi came the week before. We gave them school money, too. What a joy to see the children brought to us years ago in poor health now thriving with their families. God is good!
Mackenzie, Frantzo and Sonson started to a special school on October 11th. The HIV clinic gave us a referral to this new Catholic run school, Parc Sister Margaret Joan. I didn't think they would ever get to go to school but God provided! There are only about 20 students --- with thousands of handicapped children in Port au Prince, you can see what a miraculous opportunity this is. The boys are all smiles, loving school. Praise God for providing for these special children!!!
A few of the other students live in our direction. Three or four students with their parents ride with us in the afternoons. Once again I thank God for the pickup truck. It is blessing so many people!
The HIV clinic asked us to take two more children so we went to get them this morning after we took the kids to school. Fred's mom lost an arm in the earthquake, she has a 6 month old baby, and their living conditions are miserable. He is 2 1/2 yrs old. The first round of HIV medicines did not work for Fred: he is on another set of medicines now. If these meds don't work, Fred will die from AIDS. Christian's mother died and his father is unable to care for him. Christian is 4. Unfortunately they did not come to the hospital this morning. We hope they'll come later.
Katie Benner has been here over 3 weeks. She has worked with all the children, gone to Gonaives, helped with school and with medical appointments, been bitten by a mouse, run errands, painted half the front wall, and experienced 3 days at a local maternity hospital. She prayed with us thru a very scary time with Emanuella's pneumonia. The Lord seems to be going out of His way to plan special events for Katie. I believe HE has very big plans for her. Thanks, Father, for starting her out here! She is a treasure!
We took Emanuel's mother to Chancerelles, a large maternity hospital, the morning of Tuesday October 12th. Her baby was born at 6 pm Wednesday, Oct. 13th,. a healthy boy.
Equipment, space and respect were sadly lacking at the maternity hospital. Ladies in labor had to sit on hard, narrow benches or on the floor. Women in advanced labor lying on the floor were pushed and prodded to 'get up and walk' or to move so the floor could be mopped. But there was no place to move to. One young woman, after being cruelly mocked by a doctor for her crying and trying to get off the bench to lay on the floor, went into the bathroom and gave birth.
God's second greatest commandment to us is to love our neighbor as ourselves. The first is to love God more than anything else, even ourselves. If these commandments were followed in Haiti the nation could heal. We are praying fervently that people here will allow God to change their hearts. Permanent change is possible only when hearts are turned to God. Please pray with us for Haiti and the entire world!
We haven't had much internet for a while as it's unbelievably slow when we do have it so, sorry but no photos! Too bad cause the kids are really cute and so much is happening ...
Your response to the needs I listed in the last update was phenomenal. Here are some more things we need.

update on Haiti...
Hello everyone
Mary and I are doing fine, we are in south Fla and will be meeting with our friends at Cross International tomorrow morning before returning to Haiti on Saturday morning. It has been a joyous time of spending time with friends, family, and sharing with he Body of Christ here. One of the things which has made it a blessing while here, is having Kathy, Beaver, and Rebecca Brooks to walk in our stead in Gonaives. Kathy has returned this past Saturday and Beaver will return Monday. Below is a report from Kathy about the awesome things which our God is doing. Thanks to all of you who gave us a little of your time while we were home. Please pray for us as we return and continue our disciple making process.
With Love,
Emory & Mary Wilson
Psalm 119 :32 I will RUN in the way of your commandments when You enlarge my heart.
I guess ordinarily it is not a good report when we find out that our heart is enlarged….but when it is the hand of God that is stretching and making space it is indeed a good thing.!
Beaver and I and Rebecca and the many others that have been in Gonaives for the past two months are so grateful to be a part of the Beauty of Transformation in that place. Blessed. To be a part of what our beautiful God is doing in Gonaives…Jubilee …and in each of us.
Beaver spent time gathering the young fathers of the community and talking about what it looks like to walk with God in the Kingdom of heaven here on earth. . How being a husband and a dad that loves God and loves their families is so crucial to the way the community develops and the way the children grow. He gently corrected and instructed for Life…not condemnation, but for a future and hope.
Construction on the new school and clinic building continued … I realized how very important it is to build this space. I believe every action is a prayer…and creating space for education, and health is a vivid prayer that says, God we agree with you for the transformation of this community! We say no to manipulation and fear and bondage..we say yes to clarity of thoughts, an ample supply of food and basic needs and that every person live with hope and destiny.
The school in Jubilee stands out as a monument to HOPE and Love. It is a place where Jesus is made known through genuine acts of kindness, small almost imperceptible ways of honor and love. It is a place where children get much needed food, love , security and letters, words, ideas, hope and possibilities! This will change the future of this country.
It has no walls. It does not exist inside the walls of a closed compound. this is RADICAL for missions in Haiti. Emory and Mary Wilson chose this. On purpose. And I think God is making a huge statement to the world.
FEAR IS NOT THE BOSS. LOVE IS.
Relationship is more important than stuff and love is stronger than blocks. It is a huge radical proposition,. It is working.
Much of my time was spent time physically creating a compost center for the community to use …bringing their fruit and vegetable peelings that otherwise would go in the dump. The goal is create a stockpile of good healthy soil that anyone can use to grow gardens in their own homes. We also invested in planting several trees in the community spaces…mango, banana and coconut! David, the young father that is heading up the program has started a seed bed of veggies and flowers to share with the community. We are so excited about this project!
One of the other things necessary to plants to flourish , besides good soil, is ‘sweet” water…dlo dulce. Specifically without salt…In the last week , we were introduced to a local artisan who was drilling wells in the nearby area and coming up with sweet water. After checking out his work and watching in fascination as the men drilled for water by hand…we hired them. We should have sweet water flowing in a few more days.
We spent one week teaching the kids about plants and ecosystems that promote plant growth…we took 20-25 kids at a time to a beautiful banana and mangro grove where fresh water flowed from canals drawn from the nearby river….then we all ran down the path that led to the river itself…what followed was ecstatic kids (and a few adults as well) playing and splashing around in flowing beautiful water! I call that school .Laura Lynn , Rachel Greene and Terri Stokes were the model teachers splashing and being splashed!
We got a vision of how to move forward with the plan to create a Training School We are starting now to plan the curriculum that will train people in practical job skills and incorporate math, basic business plans and the idea of how to use micro-finance for small business start-ups. Our goal is that Haitian men and women can develop businesses that produce life giving -sustainable resources for their families and help build strong communities.
Thank you for all the many people that have prayed for us and the ones that also financially support the work of Mary and Emory Wilson in Haiti. What a very good investment you have made! They are so very loved and appreciated by the people of Gonaives!.
Grace and Peace!
Kathy Brooks

note from the wilson's & mama k
Mary and I have been enjoying time together as we spend Time at home. Mary’s neck is doing great now and the Doctor has released her. We have been spending much of our time with friends and family. Over the past two weeks, we have spent time with our daugther Lori and husband Scott in NC, visited friends of Haiti in Galax Va. and Franklin WV. This past weekend we were able to spend time with our son Justin and also visited friends of Haiti in Darien and Blackshear Ga. Below is an update from Kathy Brooks. It has been such a blessing having her and Beaver work in Gonaives while we are away. We love you and continue to thank you for your prayers and support of what God is doing in Haiti. You can see more about Haiti at the following sites;http://love4haiti.blogspot.com/ muchministries.org
This small community of jubilee is undergoing a metamorphosis. God knows when it began.. When did the first prayers go up on behalf of this small corner of the world? What nameless faceless child of faith began to speak LIFE and HOPE over this community,.
I believe those words brought Emory and Mary Wilson here….and now so many others that have added their love and prayers and action to the Speaking of Life and Hope.
The school opened to over 100 students…up from 40 something last year. What a difference in the students who began last year and can now read full sentences in English! Laura Lynn has a staff of five..3 Haitian teachers and 2 Americans. They work together to see the kids learn letters, sounds, songs. And countries of the world.
We enjoyed the PTA meeting last week. The attendance by the parents was extraordinary. Many of them work as volunteers to help pay their child‘s tuition. ( which is very very small ) The parents heartily expressed the difference in their kids…they were bringing home what they were learning at school.
I think sometimes it is difficult for us to understand how important this is. Communities left to ignorance can be so easily manipulated by fear and violence. Education opens minds to truth and real communication the very words themselves giving people a different way to think about things. .
We’ve started a composting area for local people to toss their peelings and paper scraps. The salty soil here msut be ammended to creat “bon ter” good earth for planting…. It is right in what has always been the “dump” area….beside the dysfunctional toilets that were built by the government 3 years ago. IT has begun! We bought Banana trees from a local grower and planted them near by to aid the idea of growing things….we hope to start many plants and share them with the community and good soil becomes available.
Of course I’ve found it necessary to paint a simple garden mural on the back side of the dysfunctional toilets….I will find a way to slap some paint on something!
The new building that will house classrooms, bathrooms, and a clinic are well under way. We are waiting for the iron worker to complete the doors and windows so we can begin to move classrooms into this space.
Today Beaver is beginning the construction of a simple Gazebo type structure…a meeting place…that offers shade and a simple benches . This will give the community a place to gather that is not inside the classrooms where children are trying to learn! It will also give us a place to hold training opportunities in the future. The idea is a six sides concrete slab with simple block and concrete slab benches, built in…the roof with be thatch and extend out to create the most shade possible. It is amazing how much shade has to do with what you can do here. Literally , you just can’t stand for long without it.
Terri Ann Stokes and Rachel Greene have come as teachers . Each day they return back to the house with stories and triumph …and stories that would break your heart. ! They are exhausted after teaching 6 classes in the heat and dust…but after a rest, some dinner and a cool shower, each night they are pulling out ideas, making lessons, drawing charts, and hand making writing assignments for the next day..
“Tia” (Terri’s new name.). was beyond happy with herself…this particular little guy is an orphan living with his aunt and the youngest in the household of 10 kids. Last on the food chain, so to speak…
The phrase…this is what it looks like …continually runs through my mind. It’s not flashy, it’s not big, it could be missed if one wasn’t looking for it, but I believe that this is what it looks like when the kingdom of Heaven expands…the meek are blessed, the hungry fed, the naked clothed , the sick made well …honor among brothers and sisters who speak different languages. Transformation of us all !
For all that financailly and prayerfully support this work…it is a sound worthy investment! Thank you for being a crucial part to what God is doing here!

Kathy Brooks

dorothy's update 8/10
August 25 2010
Greetings from Haiti!
Youvendji came home from the hospital! At 2 ½ years old, he weighs 22 lbs, much of which is fluid. He has sickle cell anemia, tuberculosis and malnutrition, a pretty sick little boy. He continues to have fever every day. But he doesn't know how sick he is. He snuck out of the baby room, crawled up behind me and startled me, which he thought was hilarious!
Actually, Youvendji doesn't crawl: he scoots on his bottom. He has been so badly neglected as well as sick that he never exercised enough to develop his stomach, back and buttocks muscles. He will need physical therapy eventually. For now we are concentrating on play and nutrition.
Denika, the one year old girl from Bercy, left the hospital last week. She needed 3 units of blood! The hospital enrolled her in a special program for malnourished children. Mama went back to Bercy with her and will come into town for their clinic appointments. We are glad that we could help. Thank you, Lord!
The international committee overseeing Haiti's rebuilding has made improving Haiti's education and making it accessible to everyone, not only the wealthy and middle class, one of its primary goals. YES! How thankful we are for all the Christian private schools here who educate the poorest kids for free and feed them! Five of our children will attend these schools this year. Hallelujah!!
There are several things we need now:
- liquid vitamin drops for infants (with iron if possible)
- small scalpels for minor surgeries, mostly for lancing boils (we use a small, sharp pair of scissors now, cleaning them in alcohol between patients)
- underpants for small boys, sizes 2 and 3 (even smaller for Johnny if you can find them) (not training pants)
- size 5 slim boy blue jeans (Richardson's school uniform)
- size medium and large exam gloves
If you can send these items, please contact me for the shipping address. We do not need baby clothes, blankets or stuffed toys at this time. We have been blessed with an abundance of these items!
Many boxes were unpacked in my absence and I have no way of knowing who sent what. Ask me if you want to verify that a particular item you sent was received. Thank you all for your donations! Praise God for great friends like you!
We have sponsors for every school child! We still need sponsors for our children at home. It takes a lot to run a home for 30+ children, especially babies! Babies, especially sick ones, need more caregivers than older, healthier kids. We have 19 children 2 or under: imagine washing all those diapers.
Saidel's papa came to visit this week and brought Saidel's grandmother. When Saidel (8 mos) is old enough to go home he will already be bonded with his family. They are good people. Saidel should grow up to be a fine Christian man. This is what we most love to do!
Blessings!

Words from Dorothy
Our new generator is installed! Frank King purchased and installed it for us. Somebody Cares America, who donated a large part of the funds to buy the generator, were present on installation day. Union County Baptist Association from Union, SC, donated the balance of the money!!! Many thanks to all of you and to our Lord!
Our new pickup truck - double cab, 4WD, diesel - is purchased. When I get back to complete the registration it will be ours! What a miracle! Thanks to all who worked so hard to raise money for this vehicle. Praises to God!
My new grandson's heart surgery was done June 10th. He is out of the hospital and doing well. Thank God I was able to be here! My mother recovered from her heart attack. She celebrated her 94th birthday in May!
In her final report Jessica listed some current needs:
- Pediasure (not the kids drink but the formulation designed to be a sole food for a tube-fed individual) The powdered form is not available in the USA but we can buy it in Haiti. It is very expensive.
- Infant formula. Milk-based with iron.
- Printer. Jessica said my little HP 3940 refused to print for her. The ink for our copier/scanner/printer is too expensive for daily use.
- Hand sanitizer
- More staff members. This means greater funding. Our policy is to pay decent wages for 36 to 40 hour workweeks.
- Whole-house water filtration system. A system to filter water as it leaves the cistern and before it reaches the faucets. We drink 15 to 20 gallons of water per day.
- Erythromicin suspension. An out break of skin staph infections is not responding to other antibiotics.
- Acyclovir for children.
- Propane refrigerator

update from dorothy! 5/20/10
I am still in the United States. My grandson, Cree, was born in April with a heart defect and a genetic syndrome. His heart can be repaired but we won't know until he's older how the syndrome will affect him. For now he is stable. This has been a tough time for my family and I am very glad that I was here when he was born. When Cree has heart surgery I will take care of my 2 year old grandson, Cole, a very active little rascal. Thank you all for your prayers!
The Haitian government has asked large NGOs to scale back on free food donations. More children than ever before will starve. Our ministry must grow to try to save these lives. Our focus will be on taking into our home malnourished infants and children - and their mothers when appropriate - until their families are back in their own homes and working. Please pray that everything we do will demonstrate God's love and draw people to HIM!
Jesula and Claudia, two of our wonderful Haitian nannies, have worked at FHLIR for 4 years now. They are very good but have resisted taking leadership roles. Now that I'm not there they don't have a choice. They have plenty of resources: a pediatrician available 24/7, a nurse 6 days a week, Kez drops in from time to time, mission groups have visited, they have a driver and car, and so on. These wonderful Christian ladies can discover and develop their leadership abilities. What a boon they will be to Haiti! Thank God for the chance to help HIS Haitian people learn to lead!
Isna and her new family met me in Rockville, Maryland, a few weeks ago at the White Flint mall. Isna has bonded to her family. Though I got hugs and kisses and lots of attention, Isna went to her mother or father when she wanted comfort and affection and played with her sister and brother. It was pure JOY to see Isna settled in their wonderful family!
I am proud of my Haitian family for handling everything on their own. Thanks to Beaver Brooks, Kez Furth, Wayne Dollarhide, and Jim & Kim Dewar for visiting our house and helping. Thanks to Andy Leslie who will take a group in the next couple of weeks and to Frank King who will work on getting the generator bought and installed. Many thanks to Jessica Footz who will stay with the children for the month of June. And to Abby McCullough who will spend the first two weeks of June helping Jessica. These are beautiful instances of the body of Christ working together. When one can't be there, others will.
Praise God for all his blessings! It is good to be his child and share his love with others. Thank you for working with me in this ministry.
Love to all,
Dorothy Pearce
