Gonaives, Haiti Update (from Emory Wilson)

Most of my blog readers probably don't know Emory & Mary Wilson, but they are from Waynesville where MUCH Ministries is based out of and where Junior & I live, but they live in Haiti. MUCH supports a lot of missionaries...specifically two in Port-au-Prince and two in Gonaives, but Emory & Mary we don't just support I would say we partner with...the relationship and how we do things there in Jubilee, Gonaives Haiti... is much more connected and in constant communication than the other missions that we work with. I hope that makes sense, if you have questions please don't hesitate to ask. Here is Emory's latest update! It's long, but its good....

Hello

It has been a few of very trying weeks that have taxed each of us here in Gonaives and Jubilee. It has been one of the most emotional rollercoasters we have been on, but God has seen us through it and He has been glorified in so many ways. I have not been able to communicate with many of you, because of computer issues, so I will recap what has happened in the last three weeks. I am thankful for those at SSCC who have blessed the ministry with a new computer and for Barry Harrell recovering all my files and info from the old one. It is a blessing to be able to communicate with you again.
When Hurricane Tomas passed by Gonaives on Friday night November 5th, it left a about a foot of water in the city and in Jubilee. It was a trying time for many families. Laura Lynn and Rachel were able to assist many people during that time by allowing them to come to the school to dry off and have a place to sleep. We thank God for His refuge in times of storms. Julie was at the house and made preparations for the worst along with Amos, Gertrude and Marvins. There was alitttle water in the Garage but it did not enter the rest of the house. We praise God for honoring our prayers.
On Monday the 8th of November after Tomas left we were faced with yet another storm called cholera. By Wednesday 8 people in Jubilee died from it. The whole team here was awesome in helping those who had cholera. There were many sick in their homes and many sick people came to the school to get help. The hospital in Roboto was not taking anyone with Cholera and the other hospitals were overflowing. It was not a good situation for three days. On Wednesday afternooon, We visited the Hospital again in Roboto and they allowed us to take the sick people which were at the school to their hospital. This gave us a much needed break. Each day we were dispensing clean water and oral rehydration fluids to hundreds of people. We praise God for the well which was very timely. We were able to help with education for prevention. Mary, Julie, Laura Lynn, Rachel, and Brian all worked very hard to keep people alive through iv, oral rehydration, and education. In the mist of the crisis, Nathan Blessing with Cross International traveled to Gonaives with a truck loaded with supplies which we were out of or did not have. We praise God for His provision through this time.
On the morning of Saturday the 13th, the hospital again would not assist people who had cholera. Laura Lynn took several people in who had needs and began helping them again. In the afternoon we were able to return the 5 patients at the school to the hospital in Roboto. Cholera seems to be better, but reports are they are expecting it to get worse. Over 1,600 people have lost their lives to cholera in Haiti. Near 11am that morning, Julie Aurthur who is our teacher from Virginia, received a phone call that her brother Justin Arthur had been killed in an auto accident. I have never experienced this and do not know what this family has had to endure, but I know God has been there with them. Julie was able to get a flight out that evening with Mary going with and beside her. I thank God for Mary's compassion for others which compelles her to minister to them. Mary has returned and Julie will return on the 30th. Please keep Julie and her family in your prayers.
On Tuesday the 16th we received a call from some Doctors and nurses near Cap Haitia who needed a ride to get to the airport on Wednesday. I have never traveled there but the senery was great and it reminded me of what Jubilee will look like one day. They were able to spend the night with us in Gonaives and made it to PAP in time for thier flight. We seen God's hand of protection and provision in a mighty way through this. We thank god for new friends and relationships.
We thank God for his provision through those who have visited with us over the past few weeks. The first week of November, we had a team from the Waycross, Blackshear, Ga. area with us. Their activities included completing the top on the cistren, teaching worhip songs to the children in the school, and giving lots of love to many children and adults alike. They also were very good friends who gave us encouragement to keep going. We thank God for those who have worked on this cistren to provide clean water to this community. It was definately in a good time with the cholera outbreak. On the 12th through the 14th, we had a few representatives from Somebody cares Houston who were awesome prayer warriors for the season we were going through. In addittion to praying, they helped with the medical issues, told bible stories with puppets and gave much love to everyone. They blessed the school breakfast program with much peanut butter. They were a great encouragement for Mary. The last two weeks Kathy Brooks has led a couple teams who have worked on many different projects including gardening and small business'. We also had a team here from First Baptist Hattiesberg who have been a blessing helping with construction, medical needs and loving the children. Brian Smith has been here for a few weeks working on the housing project. We now have two foundations completed and are woking on the walls of one. He will return soon to continue on this project. We thank him and those from Omaha who are working beside us in Jubilee. We praise God for those who visit us and bring the hope of God's unconditional love with them to share with us and our friends.
If you would like to see more updates on what has happened the last few weeks, you can look at muchministies.org, omaharapidresponse.blogspot.com, omaharapidresponse.org, or you can find Laura Lynn on facebook at lauralynnnichols. Many of you have asked how you can help with the school. There are opportunities to help in the school through jubileekidsinc.org .
The presidential election was held yesterday with much violence and people dumping ballot boxes in the street. It is expected to bring unrest. Please continue to pray for the government and this process.
I hope each of you have had a wonderful week this week as you have reflected on what you are thankful for during this season. As I have reflected the last few weeks, the thing that I am thankful for is God placing people around me who in the mist of a battle run towards the sound of the gunfire. Through all that has happened everyone involved has served selflessly and had the interest of others as more important than their own lives and welfare. I think that is what Oswald Chambers is talking about as he encourages us to identify with Christ's interest in other people. As we continue to ponder Jesus' probable action I am realizing that many times it calls us to a place of sacrifice and suffering on the behalf of others which is what Jesus set an example for us to do. I have found that I have failed in this area so many times because I thought what was on my agenda was more important than what God wanted to do in the lives of others, therefore I followed my desires and missed identifying His interest in others. Lord help us each day to deny ourselves and follow in your light and your steps in Jesus name. We thank you for your prayers and support and are blessed to see God honoring our prayers as we work in the Kingdom together.
With love in Christ

The Hope Center

Several years ago i volunteered with an organization in the Urban Core of Kansas City MO and it has forever changed my life....i was reminded today of how thankful i am of this ministry...its mission...its goals...and most importantly its heart....

i was visiting the website, i hadn't in a long time and had a minute to spare. to be honest it was a bit embarrising as i sat by myself at the marketplace right before i closed the shop practically bawling watching this video... praying no one walked in the door...it would be awkward.

The Hope Center 2010 from The Hope Center on Vimeo.

See, Ronald was one of the kids in my outreach bible study when i volunteered from fall 2003 to spring 2005. he was young and full of hope...later after i had stopped volunteering i heard of the loss in his family and to see his success story brought me to tears.

Every ministry i have ever been involved with since working with THC i have in a sense compared them to it...not in a bad way or anything...i just say this to explain they always come back to my mind...

the way they organize things, to their forms, to their guidelines, to there dedication, to their motivation, to the way they love people, their faith, their training, their leadership, their patience, their consistancy, their education, their radical heart for change...the growth that has happened can only be explained by God that is working in and through them...

i feel so honored to have ever been a part of something so beautiful...

thanks Hope Center...for all you have taught me and continue to teach me from afar....

but more importantly thank you for the way you change the world through the community in Kansas City....

LOVE LOVE LOVE

still declaring RETE

RETE- means stop...

we are still declaring a stop to this Cholera outbreak in Haiti... it has seemed to spread and with Tomas and flooding and the already difficult conditions this is not a surprise, but again let me put voice to the power that we have in Christ Jesus....

We can command things...we are his sons and daughters and we have power to tell the angels what to do... and even more than that...so go after it...

Tell this disease, this so called outbreak to RETE!

I read this article this morning and am calling all of us to read and then SPEAK LIFE into it...

Tell these officials what will happen, declare an ending to an outbreak, an ending to Cholera, and ending to diarrhea, an ending to dirty water, an ending to bacteria spreading...

NO CHOLERA IN THE NAME OF JESUS! MESI PAPA!!!!

(if you think i am crazy that is OK...but really its a power we take all to lightly...and who would want to do an adventure with JESUS full of FAITH if it wasn't a little crazy...)

So don't hesitate...use that power in you...pray fervently and change the world with your words... YOU HAVE THAT CAPACITY IN YOU!!!

hope in the dark

i shared this on facebook...but felt it really needed to be on my blog so if its a repeat sorry, but if not enjoy my ramblings on life...

i first saw this book a year or so ago at my dear friend sarah's... (we are kindred spirits) anyway it showed up at the market place and i couldn't pass it up...its a book filled with beautiful breath taking photography that breaks your heart and then breathes life back into it over and over as you turn the pages...this is a quote from one of the pages...and the photo of the African man with wisdom would make it much more of an impact...but i just had to put it on here...so read it...think about it...and be challenged to daily be thankful for what the Lord has given us...

"we know Americans pity Africans," he told me. "But sometimes i think Africans pity Americans." "How so?" i asked him.

"Americans seem to expect that everything will be provided for them. For us," he said, "this ear of corn is a gift from God. This evening rain is a shower of mercy upon us. This healthy breath is life-giving. And, maybe tomorrow we will not have such things, but our hearts are so full from God's provision."

the girl effect!

be wrecked....to take action

please take a minute out of your day to look at these images....

BE WRECKED.... BE MOVED TO ACTION... CRY OUT...

GOD IS CALLING US TO BE A PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER THAN OURSELVES...

BE A WARRIOR FOR YOUR NEIGHBORS...just hours away by plane...

Haiti needs us...they REALLY need us...and in TRUTH... we NEED them.

we are ONE HUMAN FAMILY, ALL Gods children...don't turn your head... take part in the restoration, transformation and rebuilding of this beautiful nation...

look at our history...our story is wrapped up in theirs.... please don't just look... be wrecked and then act....

the heart of Gods Kingdom, humanity, dignity, grace, it cries out to me, to you, to the world...to SEE & to MOVE....

poutchino how i heart you

so i haven't wrote about the little man in awhile...but i thought i would give a brief update...

i have not seen him in what feels like forever, but really its probably just been a month... he's had it rough lately though...

lots of small seizures and a really big one, that had him in the hospital for awhile...

in fact this one made me more nervous than i can even imagine...it was 40minutes long...no little one should ever have to go through something like this...but yet he continues to be one of the most joyful and resilient kids i know as he smiles and plays several hours after the fact.

when i talked with Klay that evening after they had been in the hospital awhile... Klay said... (I'm paraphrasing) its so hard... you want them to live, but maybe they would be better with their Father in Heaven...not having to struggle to tell how they feel or where it hurts... who knows what the outcome...but God knows and Poutchino is His...that's all we can do is give it to God...

i got off the phone with him and cried....how could i be so gracious... i wanted to be selfish...poutchino couldn't go home to his Father in heaven i wanted him here...i want the option to always see him...to give him hugs...to tell him i love him... i was sure Nancy...his host mama...who i thank God for every time i think of her.... was feeling the same as me....

but nonetheless....he was OK...and survived the longest ever seizure for poutchino on record... even hours after medicines to get it to stop he was still doing the after twitches...

but i believe God has such a BIG plan for this little man full of joy and life...whoever crosses his path is changed...i will be forever changed....

i will never forget running into the building for him...the joy in my anxious heart to see him and there he is playing with his toes surrounded by fear, crying, moaning and more in the aftermath of an earthquake...he will be forever etched in my heart...

and YES its God who decides his story and journey NOT me....and if His will is for a short life...my running into a building to get him will be forever worth it....i love him...and at the same time...have to let the selfishness in me go...and give God the control...and trust that it is Good...for HE IS GOOD...he created poutchi... and the world is better because of it...

all this ramble to say... he is doing better.... here is a short VIDEO that Nancy made of him feeling a bit better...

Keep lifting him up in prayer...and the Brickell's as they take care of him here!

Declarations

So i believe more and more everyday that it really is how we use our words...that the whole...life and death is held with in our tongues.... is very true....

so with that said i feel like instead of talking about what the news says in this cnn article about the storm headed towards Haiti and Jamaica...

lets declare war over the winds and rain...lets tell it to stop...lets bring the calm...lets call the angels for back up and declare that tomas will have no effect on all the children and families in these countries... that it will be a beautiful day and no one needs to worry.

lets also continue to declare the end to a "so called" outbreak of cholera in this country of Haiti i love so much...WE love SO much!!!

thanks for joining in the battle and using our tongue for LIFE...what Jesus called us TO DO!!

Dorothys Update 10/22/10

School in Port au Prince officially started Monday, October 4. Mich, Rosa, Claudine and Johnny started to school. It was their first time in school. Our whole household was in a tizzy, ironing, polishing, straightening, brushing and combing, packing lunchboxes and giving breakfast earlier than usual. It all got done and we walked the kids to school. No one cried, they were so happy to be there!

Gertie came for an overnight visit Friday October 8. It was SO good to see her! Her report card was all "tres bien"s (very goods), unsurprising for such a talented young girl. We gave her mother money for this school year. Mom promised to bring her for a longer visit in December.

Natalie, Natasha and Naomi came the week before. We gave them school money, too. What a joy to see the children brought to us years ago in poor health now thriving with their families. God is good!

Mackenzie, Frantzo and Sonson started to a special school on October 11th. The HIV clinic gave us a referral to this new Catholic run school, Parc Sister Margaret Joan. I didn't think they would ever get to go to school but God provided! There are only about 20 students --- with thousands of handicapped children in Port au Prince, you can see what a miraculous opportunity this is. The boys are all smiles, loving school. Praise God for providing for these special children!!!

A few of the other students live in our direction. Three or four students with their parents ride with us in the afternoons. Once again I thank God for the pickup truck. It is blessing so many people!

The HIV clinic asked us to take two more children so we went to get them this morning after we took the kids to school. Fred's mom lost an arm in the earthquake, she has a 6 month old baby, and their living conditions are miserable. He is 2 1/2 yrs old. The first round of HIV medicines did not work for Fred: he is on another set of medicines now. If these meds don't work, Fred will die from AIDS. Christian's mother died and his father is unable to care for him. Christian is 4. Unfortunately they did not come to the hospital this morning. We hope they'll come later.

Katie Benner has been here over 3 weeks. She has worked with all the children, gone to Gonaives, helped with school and with medical appointments, been bitten by a mouse, run errands, painted half the front wall, and experienced 3 days at a local maternity hospital. She prayed with us thru a very scary time with Emanuella's pneumonia. The Lord seems to be going out of His way to plan special events for Katie. I believe HE has very big plans for her. Thanks, Father, for starting her out here! She is a treasure!

We took Emanuel's mother to Chancerelles, a large maternity hospital, the morning of Tuesday October 12th. Her baby was born at 6 pm Wednesday, Oct. 13th,. a healthy boy.

Equipment, space and respect were sadly lacking at the maternity hospital. Ladies in labor had to sit on hard, narrow benches or on the floor. Women in advanced labor lying on the floor were pushed and prodded to 'get up and walk' or to move so the floor could be mopped. But there was no place to move to. One young woman, after being cruelly mocked by a doctor for her crying and trying to get off the bench to lay on the floor, went into the bathroom and gave birth.

God's second greatest commandment to us is to love our neighbor as ourselves. The first is to love God more than anything else, even ourselves. If these commandments were followed in Haiti the nation could heal. We are praying fervently that people here will allow God to change their hearts. Permanent change is possible only when hearts are turned to God. Please pray with us for Haiti and the entire world!

We haven't had much internet for a while as it's unbelievably slow when we do have it so, sorry but no photos! Too bad cause the kids are really cute and so much is happening ...

Your response to the needs I listed in the last update was phenomenal. Here are some more things we need.

Plastic (rubber) pants size 12 months and over

dust pans with brushes

dish cloths

dish towels

HP 60 ink cartridges, black and tricolor

God's reminder...

lately i had been debating whether or not to keep this blog open or not because i havent done a very good job of keeping up with it, especially now since one of my main duties with MUCH Ministries is make sure our website and blog is updated there....and when you are in an office and at your computer most the day...you often dont want to go home an look at a computer again...

so here i was debating to close t-raehaiti.blogspot...when God reminded me that even in the small things we do He is using us!

See i was attending the Care-Net Banguet (check them out-here) with a team from MUCH Ministries as we are connected with them and are about to collaborate with them on our MUCH Love Mentor training program. it was a great time, good food, speakers and videos...

While eating a gentleman and his wife mentioned that they had been on the Much Ministries site and then from there went to my blog...they read all about me and junior and were interested and encouraged, after the program they prayed for Junior and i and it was truly a blessing.

then after the program another man came to me and said he was on my blog and watched the video i posted called "God is not a white man" by Gungor and actually used it in a youth service at his church (check out church- here). He said the the kids loved it and wanted him to play it over and over again... he said that many kids were encouraged and changed that night. He said he wanted to thank me for posting it.

After those two conversations i was so encouraged and felt like God can use you in your every move you make and often you dont even know. What you watch, what you write, what you listen to, what you say, how you move in this world, your every movement is so important. We need to be attentive...i can't express it enough...God says 'the power of the tongue is life & death' and this is SO true!

all this to say...i am not going to close this blog. i am not discouraged, but encouraged and hope that whenever you read my writings you are encouraged as well.

thanks again...and remember comments are always welcomed!

blessings.

chocolate or freedom?

Chocolate or Freedom...

watched this today and am greatly hurt...as we all know i love chocolate...and deeply wanting to know all the facts...this video talks about Australia, does this child labor/slavery in producing cocoa for the world...is this in our American products as well....most likely yes...how can i make a difference in the decisions i make...

my desire for chocolate should NEVER out weigh the dignity and freedom of someone else's life...we are all family and we are all children of God whether we know Him or not...He created us ALL!!!

Lord help me have discernment in what chocolate i buy and how i reflect your love in the decisions i make each day... it is a BIG deal....

MUCH to come...

So there is so MUCH to write as SO much has gone on...as the owners and founders of MUCH Ministries have been in Haiti since August... so i was "the boss" but really i like to say the point person...boss is too big of a title as i seriously NEED all the team here at the MP for it to truly function.

Kathy & Rebecca got back from the 6 weeks stay in Haiti this past Saturday and Beaver is still there. I among the other Much Ministries/Market Place family have been working extremely hard doing things around the MP to help this place look amazing.... plus business has been a bit slow so we didn't sit around but moved forward and made progress to keep the momentum going in this vision God has given us here... to bring freedom and Restoration....here are somethings we accomplished.... :)

We renovated the Cool Stuff Store...YOU MUST SEE IT!!! May favorite part is the work my hubby did and our big collage of beautiful pictures of people out of the wonderful National Geographic...so people from ALL over the world...then above it says "JUST LOVE PEOPLE" and this is what we are about...spread the LOVE...and MUCH of it!!!

We renovated one of the bathrooms...its very bright and lovely!!! way to go Melissa who did most of it and ALL on her volunteer time...its great!

We put the outside eating area together as its cooling off and will be a lovely place to sit! Tiffany and I worked hard on it and its fun...

We renovated the business center a little bit...and it feels much more organized and inviting! i love having an actual desk and cork board to put things on...its very nice!

We worked on the DUI school in the back....getting closer to opening it for this community...much progress thanks to Converge a college ministry in Brunswick! we feel so honored to have this program here on our facilities!!! it should be up and running by the end of this month...pray for favor...we will get inspected and its very specific all the details that are required...

We moved things around in the gift shop and there are lots of new pottery pieces to be seen!!! thanks Mark Luke...it was greatly needed...plus it looks wonderful...you have such an eye for design!

while all this happened...junior and i were in our first weeks of marriage. its hard to run a ministry and be newlyweds...not going to lie...but he was an amazing support and worked hard to join in all that was going on...we learned a lot...and everyday i continue to be so thankful that he is mine...a true gift from my father in heaven.

so there is a quick update...i'm sure there is so much that could be shared, but for now this will do.

thanks to all you...who read, pray and support...i am beyond blessed...literally. xoxox

update on Haiti...

Hello everyone

Mary and I are doing fine, we are in south Fla and will be meeting with our friends at Cross International tomorrow morning before returning to Haiti on Saturday morning. It has been a joyous time of spending time with friends, family, and sharing with he Body of Christ here. One of the things which has made it a blessing while here, is having Kathy, Beaver, and Rebecca Brooks to walk in our stead in Gonaives. Kathy has returned this past Saturday and Beaver will return Monday. Below is a report from Kathy about the awesome things which our God is doing. Thanks to all of you who gave us a little of your time while we were home. Please pray for us as we return and continue our disciple making process.

With Love,

Emory & Mary Wilson

Psalm 119 :32 I will RUN in the way of your commandments when You enlarge my heart.

I guess ordinarily it is not a good report when we find out that our heart is enlarged….but when it is the hand of God that is stretching and making space it is indeed a good thing.!

Beaver and I and Rebecca and the many others that have been in Gonaives for the past two months are so grateful to be a part of the Beauty of Transformation in that place. Blessed. To be a part of what our beautiful God is doing in Gonaives…Jubilee …and in each of us.

Beaver spent time gathering the young fathers of the community and talking about what it looks like to walk with God in the Kingdom of heaven here on earth. . How being a husband and a dad that loves God and loves their families is so crucial to the way the community develops and the way the children grow. He gently corrected and instructed for Life…not condemnation, but for a future and hope.

Construction on the new school and clinic building continued … I realized how very important it is to build this space. I believe every action is a prayer…and creating space for education, and health is a vivid prayer that says, God we agree with you for the transformation of this community! We say no to manipulation and fear and bondage..we say yes to clarity of thoughts, an ample supply of food and basic needs and that every person live with hope and destiny.

The school in Jubilee stands out as a monument to HOPE and Love. It is a place where Jesus is made known through genuine acts of kindness, small almost imperceptible ways of honor and love. It is a place where children get much needed food, love , security and letters, words, ideas, hope and possibilities! This will change the future of this country.

It has no walls. It does not exist inside the walls of a closed compound. this is RADICAL for missions in Haiti. Emory and Mary Wilson chose this. On purpose. And I think God is making a huge statement to the world.

FEAR IS NOT THE BOSS. LOVE IS.

Relationship is more important than stuff and love is stronger than blocks. It is a huge radical proposition,. It is working.

Much of my time was spent time physically creating a compost center for the community to use …bringing their fruit and vegetable peelings that otherwise would go in the dump. The goal is create a stockpile of good healthy soil that anyone can use to grow gardens in their own homes. We also invested in planting several trees in the community spaces…mango, banana and coconut! David, the young father that is heading up the program has started a seed bed of veggies and flowers to share with the community. We are so excited about this project!

One of the other things necessary to plants to flourish , besides good soil, is ‘sweet” water…dlo dulce. Specifically without salt…In the last week , we were introduced to a local artisan who was drilling wells in the nearby area and coming up with sweet water. After checking out his work and watching in fascination as the men drilled for water by hand…we hired them. We should have sweet water flowing in a few more days.

We spent one week teaching the kids about plants and ecosystems that promote plant growth…we took 20-25 kids at a time to a beautiful banana and mangro grove where fresh water flowed from canals drawn from the nearby river….then we all ran down the path that led to the river itself…what followed was ecstatic kids (and a few adults as well) playing and splashing around in flowing beautiful water! I call that school .Laura Lynn , Rachel Greene and Terri Stokes were the model teachers splashing and being splashed!

We got a vision of how to move forward with the plan to create a Training School We are starting now to plan the curriculum that will train people in practical job skills and incorporate math, basic business plans and the idea of how to use micro-finance for small business start-ups. Our goal is that Haitian men and women can develop businesses that produce life giving -sustainable resources for their families and help build strong communities.

Thank you for all the many people that have prayed for us and the ones that also financially support the work of Mary and Emory Wilson in Haiti. What a very good investment you have made! They are so very loved and appreciated by the people of Gonaives!.

Grace and Peace!

Kathy Brooks

note from the wilson's & mama k

Mary and I have been enjoying time together as we spend Time at home. Mary’s neck is doing great now and the Doctor has released her. We have been spending much of our time with friends and family. Over the past two weeks, we have spent time with our daugther Lori and husband Scott in NC, visited friends of Haiti in Galax Va. and Franklin WV. This past weekend we were able to spend time with our son Justin and also visited friends of Haiti in Darien and Blackshear Ga. Below is an update from Kathy Brooks. It has been such a blessing having her and Beaver work in Gonaives while we are away. We love you and continue to thank you for your prayers and support of what God is doing in Haiti. You can see more about Haiti at the following sites;http://love4haiti.blogspot.com/ muchministries.org

This small community of jubilee is undergoing a metamorphosis. God knows when it began.. When did the first prayers go up on behalf of this small corner of the world? What nameless faceless child of faith began to speak LIFE and HOPE over this community,.

I believe those words brought Emory and Mary Wilson here….and now so many others that have added their love and prayers and action to the Speaking of Life and Hope.

The school opened to over 100 students…up from 40 something last year. What a difference in the students who began last year and can now read full sentences in English! Laura Lynn has a staff of five..3 Haitian teachers and 2 Americans. They work together to see the kids learn letters, sounds, songs. And countries of the world.

We enjoyed the PTA meeting last week. The attendance by the parents was extraordinary. Many of them work as volunteers to help pay their child‘s tuition. ( which is very very small ) The parents heartily expressed the difference in their kids…they were bringing home what they were learning at school.

I think sometimes it is difficult for us to understand how important this is. Communities left to ignorance can be so easily manipulated by fear and violence. Education opens minds to truth and real communication the very words themselves giving people a different way to think about things. .

We’ve started a composting area for local people to toss their peelings and paper scraps. The salty soil here msut be ammended to creat “bon ter” good earth for planting…. It is right in what has always been the “dump” area….beside the dysfunctional toilets that were built by the government 3 years ago. IT has begun! We bought Banana trees from a local grower and planted them near by to aid the idea of growing things….we hope to start many plants and share them with the community and good soil becomes available.

Of course I’ve found it necessary to paint a simple garden mural on the back side of the dysfunctional toilets….I will find a way to slap some paint on something!

The new building that will house classrooms, bathrooms, and a clinic are well under way. We are waiting for the iron worker to complete the doors and windows so we can begin to move classrooms into this space.

Today Beaver is beginning the construction of a simple Gazebo type structure…a meeting place…that offers shade and a simple benches . This will give the community a place to gather that is not inside the classrooms where children are trying to learn! It will also give us a place to hold training opportunities in the future. The idea is a six sides concrete slab with simple block and concrete slab benches, built in…the roof with be thatch and extend out to create the most shade possible. It is amazing how much shade has to do with what you can do here. Literally , you just can’t stand for long without it.

Terri Ann Stokes and Rachel Greene have come as teachers . Each day they return back to the house with stories and triumph …and stories that would break your heart. ! They are exhausted after teaching 6 classes in the heat and dust…but after a rest, some dinner and a cool shower, each night they are pulling out ideas, making lessons, drawing charts, and hand making writing assignments for the next day..

“Tia” (Terri’s new name.). was beyond happy with herself…this particular little guy is an orphan living with his aunt and the youngest in the household of 10 kids. Last on the food chain, so to speak…

The phrase…this is what it looks like …continually runs through my mind. It’s not flashy, it’s not big, it could be missed if one wasn’t looking for it, but I believe that this is what it looks like when the kingdom of Heaven expands…the meek are blessed, the hungry fed, the naked clothed , the sick made well …honor among brothers and sisters who speak different languages. Transformation of us all !

For all that financailly and prayerfully support this work…it is a sound worthy investment! Thank you for being a crucial part to what God is doing here!

Kathy Brooks

dorothy's update 8/10

August 25 2010

Greetings from Haiti!

Youvendji came home from the hospital! At 2 ½ years old, he weighs 22 lbs, much of which is fluid. He has sickle cell anemia, tuberculosis and malnutrition, a pretty sick little boy. He continues to have fever every day. But he doesn't know how sick he is. He snuck out of the baby room, crawled up behind me and startled me, which he thought was hilarious!

Actually, Youvendji doesn't crawl: he scoots on his bottom. He has been so badly neglected as well as sick that he never exercised enough to develop his stomach, back and buttocks muscles. He will need physical therapy eventually. For now we are concentrating on play and nutrition.

Denika, the one year old girl from Bercy, left the hospital last week. She needed 3 units of blood! The hospital enrolled her in a special program for malnourished children. Mama went back to Bercy with her and will come into town for their clinic appointments. We are glad that we could help. Thank you, Lord!

The international committee overseeing Haiti's rebuilding has made improving Haiti's education and making it accessible to everyone, not only the wealthy and middle class, one of its primary goals. YES! How thankful we are for all the Christian private schools here who educate the poorest kids for free and feed them! Five of our children will attend these schools this year. Hallelujah!!

There are several things we need now:

  • liquid vitamin drops for infants (with iron if possible)
  • small scalpels for minor surgeries, mostly for lancing boils (we use a small, sharp pair of scissors now, cleaning them in alcohol between patients)
  • underpants for small boys, sizes 2 and 3 (even smaller for Johnny if you can find them) (not training pants)
  • size 5 slim boy blue jeans (Richardson's school uniform)
  • size medium and large exam gloves

If you can send these items, please contact me for the shipping address. We do not need baby clothes, blankets or stuffed toys at this time. We have been blessed with an abundance of these items!

Many boxes were unpacked in my absence and I have no way of knowing who sent what. Ask me if you want to verify that a particular item you sent was received. Thank you all for your donations! Praise God for great friends like you!

We have sponsors for every school child! We still need sponsors for our children at home. It takes a lot to run a home for 30+ children, especially babies! Babies, especially sick ones, need more caregivers than older, healthier kids. We have 19 children 2 or under: imagine washing all those diapers.

Saidel's papa came to visit this week and brought Saidel's grandmother. When Saidel (8 mos) is old enough to go home he will already be bonded with his family. They are good people. Saidel should grow up to be a fine Christian man. This is what we most love to do!

Blessings!

iron sharpens iron

You know this verse about iron sharpens iron...well marriage life is this way... and everyday i am thankful, but often times...i realize i have SO much to learn and we are just in the beginning...

i am so thankful for a husband that gives me the grace to learn, that loves me in my crazy moments, my silent moments and my beautiful moments... he really is a gift God made just right for me...

i am learning i have some control issues and some confident issues...knew it before, but being married has shown me it in many different ways...but its really beautiful the way we walk through every moment of learning and growing together... giving each other grace, encouragement and LOVE.

i know, i know....newly-wed-ness (if that is a word) but i believe that Junior and i can have this love for the rest of our life if we pursue each other, communicate, and above all seek the Father's heart for each other....may we always see each other through our savior's eyes....

pray for this in our life...may we be an example to all around us showing Christ's love for the church and our Love for HIM.... May we be different and may we be magnetic in the way He uses us to bring glory to His Kingdom!

thanks for all those who have played a part in our story, small or big, it is a gift and blessing from above.... click HERE to view some photos from our wedding weekend.... and click HERE to view pictures from our BIG DAY!!!

Revelation

Today MackTucker talked about the Holy Spirit and Revelation!!! I thought i would share some of my notes, if anything just to help it soak into to my own spirit, but perhaps in the process you (reader) may get something out of it.

there are many aspects to the Holy Spirit... and the majority of these aspects come through revelation

Comfort
counselor
teacher
guide
empowerment

He does this by giving us revelation!

when get HIS revelation NO ONE can take it away from you.

God has answer for EVERY situation------He is just waiting to reveal it to you.

there are absolutes, but HE so desires to bring YOU into your FULL abundance of revelation...

if you wanna know God's LOVE it comes through revelation! L-I-S-T-E-N

We must desire HIS REVELATION!
  • seekers in the Kingdom always are finders
  • must be willing to be still and listen
  • simply comes from the spirit
May i seek you, be still and listen, and let the Holy Spirit bring revelation.

quote today

Read this today and fell in love.... its beautiful.
"Ocassionally in life there are those moments of unutterable fullfillment which cannot be completely explained by those symbols called words. Their meanings can only be articulated by the inaudible language of the heart"

18 days....

Junior & I have been married for 18 days today...and its the best thing i have ever experienced in my life...how beautiful for our Father in heaven to create something so amazing.... HE IS SO GOOD!!!

we had an amazing wedding...i couldnt have ask for more... the amount of people it took to put together...the amount of love for all those that volunteered to make it all happen...the people that gifted us to make it more beautiful than i could have imagined....it was the best day of our lives...we will be forever grateful...you ALL know who you are...there is WAY TOO MANY to name you all!

i was so over stimulated that morning with the amount of love and people i loved in one room...my cup literally runneth over...then that evening i was so overwhelmed and oblivious to most things because of the beautiful bubble God created surrounding me and junior...i was so focued on Him and Junior...to be honest i missed a lot of the night...but i was right where i wanted to be...in the arms and my Father in heaven and my husband....

the next week was our honeymoon...and it was wonderful...savannah is beautiful, the loft we rented was amazing...we saw dolphins swim...we went on a ghost tour...we walked around...we went to the beach...we played in the fountain...we ate wings...we ate ice cream.... we saw God continually bless us... we are very very thankful! thank you Glenda!

then we came home...and i dont think it has ever felt that good to be home at the cottage....i did a work of week and junior got a job cutting trees with mr. jacobs... (thank you lord) we worked on getting settled and continued seeing God work... we are surrounded and loved by so many that only God can explain the way things have worked in our life thus far.

we went to jacksonville for Juniors birthday and it was great... a weekend with my husband doing my best to make him feel really LOVED....i am so glad he was born... i mean seriously...really glad! it was also wonderful to see his family there... to swim...to go dancing...to walk on the beach...just me and him...to run errands and finally get that TV hes been wanting for SO long!!!! again...getting home was wonderful...

now we are into our 3rd week and more and more everday our home is becoming more cozy and everyday i am more thankful than the day before that i married him... this week he got work all week and i am off work because the shop (much ministires/the market place) is closed...i know its crazy...but i miss him...glad God has given him work...but wish he was off with me....

working on organizing the house more...changing my name...becoming and notary for the MP, getting the tags on Juniors truck... much more... hope to get it all done by Saturday so we can just chill before Beaver leaves for Haiti....

so there is a lil recap of the last 18days of married life... its really wonderful...i am so excited for the years to come!!! i am so glad that i got the choice to choose junior... and so thankful he chose me... i love him not bc its a feeling, but bc its who God wanted and created for me....and i am commiting my life to...its a truly beautiful thing to choose to love someone...and with him its pretty easy... hes the best man i know....

ok i will stop with the cheese....

thanks again everyone that made our BIG day so beautiful, filled with love....above all we wanted it to honor God and i believe through all of you...HE WAS!!!!!

Think about it!

Words from Dorothy

July 4, 2010
Chicken pox struck in May and June. 14 (almost half) of our children, a nanny's daughter, and our cook have had chicken pox. Little Rosa suffered the most, crying for 2 days. Rosa and several of the other children have HIV. Their weak immune systems make chicken pox far more dangerous for them. A few of the children just broke out, so it isn't over yet. Praise God for those who have recovered!!! Pray for those still, or soon to be, infected.

Our new generator is installed! Frank King purchased and installed it for us. Somebody Cares America, who donated a large part of the funds to buy the generator, were present on installation day. Union County Baptist Association from Union, SC, donated the balance of the money!!! Many thanks to all of you and to our Lord!

Our new pickup truck - double cab, 4WD, diesel - is purchased. When I get back to complete the registration it will be ours! What a miracle! Thanks to all who worked so hard to raise money for this vehicle. Praises to God!

New beds were donated for our children by a group led by Andy Leslie. I can't wait to get home and see them! They emjptied the pool, too, and did lots of other stuff! Thanks!!!!
Resting in God results in renewed spirit and strength and vision. Future plans include a greater ministry to our workers, loving them, showing them how precious they are, empowering them to change their lives and those of others.

My new grandson's heart surgery was done June 10th. He is out of the hospital and doing well. Thank God I was able to be here! My mother recovered from her heart attack. She celebrated her 94th birthday in May!
Jessica had a tough time in June. Both refrigerators stopped working. 14 children had chicken pox. The Isuzu, still our only vehicle, broke down even after $1500 of repairs which were supposed to fix everything crucial. Printers not working. Forced to use food money to buy acyclovir, necessary for viral infections in HIV children. Organized donated items. Still, she persevered and left the home in the best condition possible. Thank you, Jessica! Thank you, Abby McCullough, for helping Jessica, and Frank King, for your extra support.

In her final report Jessica listed some current needs:
  • Pediasure (not the kids drink but the formulation designed to be a sole food for a tube-fed individual) The powdered form is not available in the USA but we can buy it in Haiti. It is very expensive.
  • Infant formula. Milk-based with iron.
  • Printer. Jessica said my little HP 3940 refused to print for her. The ink for our copier/scanner/printer is too expensive for daily use.
  • Hand sanitizer
  • More staff members. This means greater funding. Our policy is to pay decent wages for 36 to 40 hour workweeks.
  • Whole-house water filtration system. A system to filter water as it leaves the cistern and before it reaches the faucets. We drink 15 to 20 gallons of water per day.
  • Erythromicin suspension. An out break of skin staph infections is not responding to other antibiotics.
  • Acyclovir for children.
  • Propane refrigerator
I return to Haiti Friday, June 9. Contact me about coming to help. Bless you all for your prayers and support.

dorothys update 05/31/10

May 31, 2010
Wilmerson's PCR test is negative -- that means he does not have the HIV virus! He was 4 months old when his aunt brought him to us after his mother was killed in the earthquake. His screening test for HIV (which only tests for antibodies) was positive but the PCR proves that the antibodies in his blood came from his mother, not his own immune system. PRAISE GOD for this fantastic news! (Wish I had an updated photo of him. He looks much better now!)
Mother's Day in Haiti was this past Sunday. Kez made a party for the nannies and kids with Watermelon!! Thanks for the pictures, Kez! It looks like everyone had a great time. Those wonderful ladies need to know how treasured they are for the great work they do with the kids! Thanks, Lord, for our beautiful Haitian staff and for Kez giving her time to honor them.
Jessica will begin tomorrow to watch over our house for the month of June. Thanks, Jessica! Please send lots of pictures and stories.
A new car. Truck, rather. That has sounded almost impossible to me for a very long time but faithful partners have been working hard to raise the money. Frank King is in Haiti now, doing the shopping. If all goes as planned, we will have a BRAND NEW Tata Xenon dual cab, 4WD, diesel pickup truck by the end of June. I'm still hesitant to celebrate - after all, anything can happen in Haiti - but it really looks like this will happen. THANK YOU, LORD! and Frank! and our many many friends who have been working so hard!
(We're making progress on the generator, too. I hope we can report success in the next update. Generators and vehicles are both scarce in Haiti now.)
Children in the USA reacted with amazing compassion to the earthquake in Haiti. Wanting to help, the Child's Play Preschool at Lakewood Presbyterian Church, where my neice Nicol Mickler teaches, collected socks for our children. 1200 pairs!!!! Young American children are learning that they can make a difference. The LORD is SO proud of them! So am I.

FUN! I have seen THREE of my Haitian kids while in the US! Isna and her family visited me in Maryland. Poutchino and Christelle went to the zoo with Nancy and me. They are beautiful! radiant! glowing! My heart sings praises to the Lord when I see what HE has done for these children!
Mother's Day was a day of mourning for hundreds, maybe thousands, in Haiti. We all need to remember that the needs there are bigger than ever. Our mission will be growing and expanding to help as many as we can. Please pray that we will honor God and bring eternal change as well as improving circumstances, and that everyone around us will see God, not us. We would love to have you partner with us.
God bless you!

thanks andrew

loved this blog written by andrew.... the rhythms of life... just wanted to share.

internet

so i have been waiting for about a month or longer...to get internet out here in the little cottage...and it has finally come...PRAISE THE LORD!!!

i am so thankful...now i can skype with junior and not just talk on the phone but see his face and feel a little bit closer...

gosh this whole distance thing is hard. but in less than 55 days we will be married...and i am abundantly blessed. he is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

every little step gets our home a little closer to feeling like a real home. and so many people have allowed it to be so...we are forever grateful.

i head to JAX airport at 3:45am to get on a 6am flight and will get to kcmo around noon. i didnt get everything done i wanted to today...but its all good.

because as junior put it... "i got done what God wanted done..." or at least i like to believe in this... He sees all my potential and knows who i REALLY am no matter what i accomplish...what a great Father i have! He loves me so!!!!!

ok...back to packing...

maybe... i think i am distracted by the fact that i have internet...pandora...my blog... the world at my finger tips and soon a live video of my future husband to talk to

...oh Lord i am thankful for the knowledge you give to bring technology...

but off to pack...yet still i will enjoy pandora!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what a lovely life He has blessed me with.... overflowing.....

compassion

"the word compassion is derived from the Latin words pati and cum, which together mean "to suffer with." Compassion asks us to go where it hurts, to enter into places of pain, to share in brokenness, fear, confusion, and anguish. Compassion challenges us to cry out with those in misery, to mourn with those who are lonely, to weep with those in tears. Compassion requires us to be weak with the weak, vulnerable with the vulnerable, and powerless with the powerless. Compassion means full immersion in the condition of being human (emphasis mine)."

HOLY HOLY HOLY is the Lord God Almighty!!!

He gets all the credit for this one...

Junior and I have 8 more weeks until we are married!

We cannot wait!!

Much to be done... but goodness gracious practically everyday God provides and affirms our union and i cannot be more thankful.

the littlest things are SO not little when God is doing them and you know that you dont really deserve them... but He never thinks like that because He loves us SO abundantly!!!

where do i start... i cant begin to list all the ways people are blessing us with their time, skills, resources, counsel, prayer, words of life.... i believe that GOD is everywhere in this and i will claim that all of our live... because our words speak life or death... we DESIRE to speak life...

PRAISE THE LORD!!!!!

GLORY BE TO GOD!!!!!

worth the read

AGAIN....my sister finds the greatest things!!!!

mama's & papa's and all those that are potentials to be one day... which is about everyone!!

breathe

i just cried reading this post my sister put up... (http://ataylor3.blogspot.com/2010/05/cnns-rescued.html) watching these short videos done by CNN...seeing my friends the Manassero's and knowing I was there during all this... overwhelmed with emotions i can't believe its been over 4 months since the earthquake.

i can't believe that i still haven't been back to see all their beautiful faces... i can't believe that life is still going on... and yet so many are still in SO much need. i just was really overwhelmed by how rushed my life has been lately...how filled it has been with planning and yet...friends of mine...babies...and people i have invested years in are still full of fear living on edge praying for no more aftershocks and helping those in need.

i wish i was there. i wish i could hug sr. jesula and tell her i am SO proud of her for stepping up and taking on more leadership at Dorothys... and that i LOVE her. i wish i could tell sr. claudia that i am so glad she is okay. i wish i could see dyana and Claudia's new baby. i wish i could tell kevs i love him...i wish i could give emily a hug and see that she is okay. i wish i could take a trip to bercy and see all of them...let them know how glad i am that they are okay face to face...i want to tell chris how proud i am of the way she handle things... i want to do life there... if anything just for a little bit again. i guess i haven't really stopped to realize how much i miss it and really just how much i miss them... my haitian family.

i haven't even written on my blog in God knows how long... and for those of you who read my blog...or well did read my blog i'm sorry.

i was telling my best girlfriend beatriz yesterday that i haven't written in a journal pretty much since the earthquake...i mean i have written notes from church...every once in awhile something else...but not at all like i used to. i told her my journal got messed up in the earthquake...she asked 'does it have something to do with that, maybe you are associating it with that'...i said i dont know.

i know that since the earthquake i know God in a way i never knew Him before... and for some reason i just don't need a journal that much to connect with Him like i used to... that His presence is SO much more real to me than ever before... that I constantly feel in connection with Him.... how could i not... He's given me His heart...He's saved me...He's made me whole... He's walk all the roads ahead of me, with me and behind me... He is my refuge...my strength...my everything...and a journal...well perhaps its a beautiful thing... but its much deeper than any pen or pad of paper could bring. and i am very thankful.

I love Him with all my heart...and despite the tears of pain i cry for the suffering going on in Haiti i know He has won the victory...and His kingdom is HERE NOW.... its not just coming... its NOW. i know every tear i shed HE sheds much more... the pain I saw and experienced was just a glimpse of what He sees everyday...but the great part is He see all the GOLD as well.

i am striving to always see the Gold!

i know i am not suppose to go to Haiti again...not until Junior & I can go together and I am at peace with this...but watching those videos on my sister's blog was the first time i have really stopped and felt all of that in awhile... i feel like i have just been surviving... that this season of transition and preparation for what's next is good...but i have just been trying to survive it...because i want the 'what's next' but i need to really be present and not just survive...i need to feel and focus...to be productive and alive... to learn and grow and be about the now...even though i am extremely ready for what's next.

update from dorothy! 5/20/10

I am still in the United States. My grandson, Cree, was born in April with a heart defect and a genetic syndrome. His heart can be repaired but we won't know until he's older how the syndrome will affect him. For now he is stable. This has been a tough time for my family and I am very glad that I was here when he was born. When Cree has heart surgery I will take care of my 2 year old grandson, Cole, a very active little rascal. Thank you all for your prayers!

The Haitian government has asked large NGOs to scale back on free food donations. More children than ever before will starve. Our ministry must grow to try to save these lives. Our focus will be on taking into our home malnourished infants and children - and their mothers when appropriate - until their families are back in their own homes and working. Please pray that everything we do will demonstrate God's love and draw people to HIM!

Jesula and Claudia, two of our wonderful Haitian nannies, have worked at FHLIR for 4 years now. They are very good but have resisted taking leadership roles. Now that I'm not there they don't have a choice. They have plenty of resources: a pediatrician available 24/7, a nurse 6 days a week, Kez drops in from time to time, mission groups have visited, they have a driver and car, and so on. These wonderful Christian ladies can discover and develop their leadership abilities. What a boon they will be to Haiti! Thank God for the chance to help HIS Haitian people learn to lead!

Isna and her new family met me in Rockville, Maryland, a few weeks ago at the White Flint mall. Isna has bonded to her family. Though I got hugs and kisses and lots of attention, Isna went to her mother or father when she wanted comfort and affection and played with her sister and brother. It was pure JOY to see Isna settled in their wonderful family!

I am proud of my Haitian family for handling everything on their own. Thanks to Beaver Brooks, Kez Furth, Wayne Dollarhide, and Jim & Kim Dewar for visiting our house and helping. Thanks to Andy Leslie who will take a group in the next couple of weeks and to Frank King who will work on getting the generator bought and installed. Many thanks to Jessica Footz who will stay with the children for the month of June. And to Abby McCullough who will spend the first two weeks of June helping Jessica. These are beautiful instances of the body of Christ working together. When one can't be there, others will.

Praise God for all his blessings! It is good to be his child and share his love with others. Thank you for working with me in this ministry.

Love to all,

Dorothy Pearce
